Summer Symposium: Composition

Composition Program:

create new music for professional musicians to premiere and record

Students enrolled in the composition track will work with LAM faculty to compose pieces for a professional trio and will have their pieces performed and professionally recorded during the symposium showcase!

Faculty will lead students in group classes to learn more about the composition process and the general knowledge required to write music such as composition software instruction, creative process of writing music & a more in-depth understanding of various instruments to aid in the writing process. In week 2 students will work with the professional trio to workshop their piece to prepare it for performance.

Program includes:

  • Group Composition Classes

  • Access to composition stations and software

  • Private lesson and mentorship support

  • Guided Writing Time

  • Workshopping with professional musicians to perform your pieces

  • Premier & recording of original composition during the symposium showcase

  • Participation in group classes and guest workshops with all Symposium students

Behind the Scenes

Students enjoy live instrument demonstrations and learn how to write for each instrument according to its unique sounds, capabilities & strengths.

Students in this program will develop skills in shaping musical material, notating ideas effectively, and collaborating with performers to bring their music to life.

Tyler Taylor - Composition Faculty

Tyler Taylor will be joining the Summer Symposium as a core faculty member of the composition program!

Tyler was recently a full time resident composer at the Louisville Orchestra as part of the inaugural installation of their Creators Corps residency program. In this role Tyler wrote several new works for the orchestra and worked closely with organizations, schools, and programs in the city of Louisville. He established and taught the Louisville Orchestra Young Composer Program for JCPS students grades 4-12 where students had new compositions workshopped and performed by members of the LO. Tyler has also held residencies at the I-Park Foundation (2023) and the Copland House (2023).
